IIM-A Visit

It’s no secret that IIM-A (Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad) is the Mecca of management. Hence being the first batch, it was a moment of pride for all of us to be able to attend a management training programme at IIM Ahmedabad called “Excellence in Management” conducted by Ahmedabad Management Association (AMA).

With the culmination of semester II examinations we were ready with all bags packed and minds full of questions, excitement and curiosity. The mere experience of living on an IIM campus was something we were looking forward to. And we weren’t disappointed at all!

From the wee hours of day 1 till the next four days, we suddenly felt this aura of enlightenment dawn upon us. IIM-A tends to have that effect on you. So it didn’t bother us one bit that we had to begin our programme the same day we arrived at Ahmedabad.

Each session had so much to offer on a variety of topics by eminent speakers that not for once were we tired of attending 9a.m. to 5:30p.m. workshops. The sessions were interactive and the opulence of knowledge it offered to each of us goes without saying. The topics covered all aspects of management. We attended lectures on varied topics like business strategy in emerging environment, global business etiquette, resource mobilisation for industry, excellence in sales and marketing, the list goes on…

From debates to discussions to some very thought provoking scenarios and ideas presented by the professors, each session was an intellectual treat to the mind.

The evenings were equally fun filled which included a lot of photo clicking sessions, a good game of cricket, wandering on the mammoth campus of IIM A, playing a game of UNO, shopping at law gardens to rekindling the children in us by playing games we had long forgotten.

Visiting the library of IIM-A was another world tour in itself. Picture this: Four floors of
evolutionary knowledge stacked together on topics one couldn’t even think of. From journals, to magazines to scholarly articles to manuscripts to books covering a wide array of topics to newspapers dated as far back as 1965, IIM-A had it all. One could easily get lost in it, quite literally.

The programme also included a half day visit of the Ahmedabad city. We visited places like the Sabarmati Ashram, Hathee Sing Jain temple (derasar), Durga- Sarkhej Roza, Adalaj Stepwell, all which had very interesting histories to their credit. Not to forget the meals offered were delectable and had the Gujarat flavour to it.

To sum it all up the experience of being able to attend such a well coordinated and an absolutely enriching programme is something we will be grateful to our institute for, especially to our Director ( Dr. Ramchandran) upon whose insistence this programme was scheduled.

Tarapur Visit:

After a lot of backend efforts and permissions finally granted to our Institute, it was on February 02, 2010, early in the morning at 6 a.m. that we all gathered at our college to proceed to NUCLEAR POWER CORPORATION INDIA LTD (NPCIL), TARAPUR, Maharashtra.
It’s the very location where the first ever nuclear power plant started its operation in Maharashtra.
To say that the safety check procedures were very strict would be an understatement!

Our request was approved by Mr. Vasudevan (HR), Tarapur and the same was faxed to our Director, Mr. S.Ramchandran, who was a great source of guidance in the entire event.

We are really thankful to the legendary Dr. Homi Bhabha, who gave birth to this nuclear technology in our country, our Institute Director and the authorities at the Tarapur Plant, to help us expand our knowledge on areas like Radioactive Environment and Safety Measures, Solar Power Generation, Secure Nuclear Waste Disposal and Overall Power development in any location, problems faced by our Mother Nature and how can they be tackled with the implementation of Nuclear Energy.

The visit provided us with an overview about the potential that lies untapped in our nation and how can Nuclear Energy strengthen us and bring us at par with other nations.

We were also explained about the safety measures being practiced by NPCIL which is important for the human resources working there and contributing towards a safe & strong nation.

We were guided to the vast Simulation Labs and Live Control rooms from where the real time operations were executed with utmost safety precautions. The pristine & never ending Arabian Sea provides the direct source of water to carry out related operations.

Within a few hours, the memorable journey ended and we returned back to the city with a feeling of respect and gratitude towards the people who added the global silver lining to our nation.

As a part of security measures at NPCIL, no storage devices (like camera, cell phones, etc) were permitted so we could not capture the visit in the form of snaps but the memory of the same etched in our minds is still as fresh as ever!
